Our Story

DMS, originally founded in 1999 as a private company, operates currently as a Non Profit Company (NPC).

Mobirise

DMS’ vision has broadened beyond building capacity of people managing disaster and business risk in a safe and sustainable environment, toward ensuring resilient communities that are self-reliant and adaptable through sustainable livelihoods.  DMS NPC also became a member of the Touching Africa Association, providing DMS NPC an incredible opportunity to broaden our resources and capabilities for the purposes of enhancing community resilience in Africa.

Our Organisational Structure

DMS NPC structured in such a way to enable the building blocks within communities, to develop and build mature communities, resilient to priority threats.

Mobirise

To keep pace with the new change for DMS to a NPC (non profit company), the structure has also evolved beyond building capacity of people managing disaster and business risk in a safe and sustainable environment, toward ensuring resilient communities that are self-reliant and adaptable through sustainable livelihoods. With a visionary, dedicated and passionate team, DMS NPC aspires to enable the building blocks within communities, to develop and build mature communities, resilient to priority threats.

Our Business Approach

With the shifting of paradigms from reactive emergency management to disaster risk reduction, adaptation and resilience, there is greater emphasis on proactive pre-disaster and developmental interventions.

Mobirise

DMS's Solution Compact Model shows two interlinking cycles, namely the developmental planning and the operational planning cycles. The three common components shared between the two cycles are: “understanding risk”; “risk reduction planning” and “early warning systems”.DMS strives to support each of the cycles represented above, and uphold and enhance each of the components within, in every project or programme DMS is tasked to fulfil and deliver.

Our Dynamic Process

DMS's process is to determine, understand and access local needs and the risks that communities are exposed too.

Mobirise

For any planning process to be successful, one must first understand local needs and the risks that communities are exposed too. The outcome of this is a dynamic community based needs and risk profile. Through participatory mapping and consultative workshops with communities and other relevant stakeholders, DMS facilitates the gathering, analysis and evaluation of information for the various components of risk (hazards, conditions of vulnerability and capacity), to determine priority risks, significant to the communities in which they exist. This information is used to develop and continuously update a dynamic community based needs and risk profile, which informs ongoing development and disaster risk planning processes.
